MontPIRG, Montana Attorney
General Stand Up For Consumer Privacy
At MontPIRG’s request, state attorney general Mike McGrath sent
a letter to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) supporting an
opt-in policy regarding rules that govern the sale of consumer information.
McGrath and MontPIRG joined consumer advocates and attorney generals
in over 30 other states asking the FCC to require that corporations get
a customer’s approval before selling their private information (such
as calling records) to other companies.
At issue is the decision by Qwest, a Denver-based telecommunications
corporation, to begin selling its customers’ detailed calling records.
Qwest included notices in December bills telling customers they had 30
days to contact the company if they wanted to opt-out and keep their information
private. After an angry response from the public, Qwest later withdrew
plans to share customer information and decided to wait until the FCC
issues new rules.
