MontPIRG Recruits Students
for Alternative Spring Break
Group Holds Info Session About Break On Thursday
MontPIRG is offering students a chance to get
class credit, free travel, free housing, and take part in what the organizers
call “direct democracy” this spring break.
“Talking face-to-face with 11,000 people about an issue, that’s as
grassroots as it gets,” said Gerik Kransky, MontPIRG’s I-145 Coordinator.
“This will be a political effort by students like no other this semester.”
The alternative spring break is part of MontPIRG’s effort to collect
nearly 30,000 signatures from across the state. Participating students
will go to different Montana communities to qualify initiative I-145,
an initiative aimed at getting the state to buy back several hydroelectric
dams in Montana. The low-cost power from those dams would be dedicated
to residential power users in the state.
But before any of the travel and petitioning take place, the group
is holding an informational session Thursday night to let students more
about the program. “If students haven’t made any plans yet,
they should check out the info session,” said Kransky. “We hope
to let folks know more about what the alternative spring break entails
and then sign people up who want to work on the campaign.”
Interested students are encouraged to come to MontPIRG’s Alternative
Spring Break Info Session on Thursday, March 7th, at 6pm in UC 329
Students who have any questions about the campaign or the alternative
spring break should call David at 243-2908.
